HIA- Boral GreenSmart awards to honour sustainable building and design

Building professionals from around Australia gather in Melbourne on August 24th for the eighth annual Housing Industry Association -Boral GreenSmart Awards ceremony at the Crown Entertainment complex.

The awards promote and showcase the best in sustainable building and design with 13 categories, headed by the prestigious HIA GreenSmart Building of the Year, partnered by Colorbond.

According to HIA, the GreenSmart program was established at the end of the last century. HIA saw that concern for the environment was not a passing fad and would play an increasingly important role in our lives as time when by.

At the same time HIA believe oppressive legislation is not efficient way of achieving the best sustainable outcomes. That is why GreenSmart has always been a voluntary program which flourishes through education and the example set to others by its enthusiastic members.

The success of the awards can be measured by their continued popularity and the quality and quantity of the entries received.

This year has been outstanding with builders, developers and manufacturers all anxious to display their best work and products.

It is not just the entries that highlight the importance of the awards. HIA sponsoring partners include some of the big companies in Australian construction. Special mention should be made of Boral, which has been with them for three years and this year has secured the naming rights for the awards.

The guest speaker for the awards ceremony is the Shadow Minister for Housing, Tanya Plibersek MP.
