HIA supports Labor’s IR Policy statement

Federal Labor’s IR Policy statement provides HIA with clarity and assurances in relation to their employment policies, particularly for the building and construction industry.

According to Housing Industry Association, Labor’s Forward with Fairness provides a framework for balancing the demands for flexibility and fairness in the workplace.

The policy statement represents a considered assessment of the needs of small business as raised by HIA, including measured transitional provisions, flexibility in agreement/awards as well as a commitment to prevent any return to industrial lawlessness.

HIA supports Labor’s commitment to zero tolerance towards intimidation or violence by any third party in the building and construction industry. HIA has concerns in this area and Labor has responded.

Importantly, the announcement addresses the key issues employers face in negotiating fair but flexible wages and conditions for business particularly small business under both awards and agreements.

HIA looks forward to further discussions with Labor in relation to small business and independent contractor issues as they apply to the residential construction industry.
